The risk is stopping there, as if student motivation were a fixed trait: some students have it, others do not. Research on motivation tells a more useful story for teachers: the environment can feed or weaken the desire to participate, try, and improve.

The operational question is not "how do I motivate everyone all the time?". It is more realistic: which conditions can I create so that starting, staying in the task, and seeing progress become easier?

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation: why rewards and grades are not enough

Intrinsic motivation appears when a person does something because it feels interesting, meaningful, or satisfying. Extrinsic motivation appears when behavior is driven by an external consequence: grade, reward, punishment, approval, or deadline.

In class, both exist. Grades are real, assignments have deadlines, and students also need to learn content they would not have chosen alone. The point is not to build everything only on reward and control.

When students understand the value of an activity, feel capable of succeeding, and perceive that the teacher is not only controlling them, even a required task can become more sustainable.

The three levers of Self-Determination Theory

Self-Determination Theory identifies three central psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Self-Determination Theory official site

In school terms:

  1. Autonomy: students feel they have some choice, understanding, and participation, not only orders to follow.
  2. Competence: students perceive that they can improve and see concrete signs of progress.
  3. Relatedness: students feel they belong to a context where they can ask for help, take risks, make mistakes, and contribute.

These three levers do not make every activity exciting. They do make it more likely that students enter the task instead of avoiding it.

Autonomy in class: give choice without losing structure

Autonomy does not mean leaving students alone or turning every lesson into a continuous vote. It means giving margins of control that fit the learning objective.

Simple examples:

  1. choose between two output formats: map, short text, or oral explanation;
  2. choose the order for three exercises;
  3. bring one personal question into the discussion;
  4. know why the activity matters, not only that it is required;
  5. help define success criteria.

The decisive step is explaining the why. "We are studying this structure because it helps you keep the thread during an oral exam" is different from "do this worksheet because I said so".

Competence: the feeling of being able to do it

Students are more easily motivated when they see that effort produces a result. If the task is always too easy, there is no growth. If it is always too hard, they give up.

Competence grows through reachable but challenging goals, worked examples, specific feedback, and opportunities to correct. It is not enough to say "good job" or "try harder". Feedback needs to show the next step:

  1. "You used the right keyword; now connect the cause."
  2. "The sequence is clearer than last time."
  3. "The error is in step two: if you fix it, the reasoning works."
  4. "This map helps you remember three ideas; now add one example."

This does not mean eliminating grades or recognition. It means using them together with feedback that makes progress visible.

Relatedness: motivation also depends on classroom climate

Relatedness is not a soft element separate from learning. It affects how willing students are to take risks, ask questions, correct themselves, and participate.

A motivating climate is not one where everyone is always satisfied. It is one where error does not become identity, comparison does not become humiliation, and the teacher keeps expectations high but readable.

In practice, relatedness appears in small choices: calling on a student when they have tools to answer, asking pairs to prepare a question first, using private feedback when the error is delicate, and valuing a strategy, not only the result.

Example: turning a test into a motivating path

Imagine a class preparing for a history test. Saying "study the chapter" leaves many students without a grip. A more motivating version can have three steps:

  1. Autonomy: students choose between two review products: essential map or oral outline.
  2. Competence: the teacher shows one effective answer and one incomplete answer, then asks students to improve it.
  3. Relatedness: the class works in pairs to check whether each map includes cause, event, consequence, and keyword.

Checklist for designing a more motivating lesson

Before proposing an activity, check these points:

  1. Does the student understand why they are doing this task?
  2. Is there a small margin of choice?
  3. Is the first step clear enough to start immediately?
  4. Is the level challenging but reachable?
  5. Does feedback show concrete progress?
  6. Is error treated as information, not as a label?
  7. Is there a tool that helps organize the material?

If too many answers are missing, motivation cannot be demanded. It needs to be designed.
